T he UM–Flint Alumni Board brings together alumni from across careers, campuses and generations to build meaningful connections — between alumni and students, between past and present and between the university and the community. Brian Barrie, ‘85
Public Administration
With a 30-year career in state government, including leadership in Michigan’s Medicaid program, Brian brings public-service experience, a passion for campus recreation and an enthusiasm for staying connected to UM–Flint.
Favorite memory: His MPA studies and racquetball at the Recreation Building.
Why he serves: To stay connected and contribute to rewarding alumni and student programs. Go Blue!
Abraham Dabaja, ’25
Marketing
A recent graduate and student leader, Abraham served as Student Body Vice President, led the club baseball team, and founded the Podcast Club and the Honors Student Council. He’s launching a career in sports marketing with dreams of working in Major League Baseball.
Favorite memory: Speaking to new students and inspiring them — “that will always stick with me.”
Why he serves: To give back and encourage student engagement on campus and in the community.
Vanessa Ferguson, ‘03
Communications
Through Action Communication, Vanessa supports nonprofits with messaging, grant writing and fundraising. She also teaches at Mott Community College and has helped create local amenities, such as dog parks, in her community.
Favorite memory: Watching the White Building’s construction and attending its dedication before taking classes there.
Why she serves: UM–Flint profoundly impacted her life — she wants to give back and stay engaged locally.
Brian Hercliff-Proffer, ‘07
Honors Communication – Mass Media
Brian brings nearly 20 years of higher-education experience leading membership engagement, professional development, and accessibility work at national and campus levels. He’s passionate about building programs that welcome and center students and alumni.
Favorite memory: “Hanging out in the UCEN — ‘dino nuggets’ from Halo Burger and watching TV on the carpeted box seating.”
Why he serves: To foster belonging and lifelong alumni connections.
Kim S. Knag, ‘96, ‘01 (MBA)
Business Administration, Marketing
Kim returned to school while raising a family and working full time, graduating with high honors. He spent a successful career in leadership roles at DTE and now enjoys retirement while volunteering at UM–Flint.
Favorite memory: The friendships he’s formed, especially through the Alumni Board.
Why he serves: To give back and support others on their life journeys.
Kyle Manley, ‘14
Psychology
Kyle was an active student leader in various organizations, including EOI, Black Student Union and Student Government. With a decade in college access and recruitment, he focuses on equity, advising and opening doors for future students.
Favorite memory: Advocating for the campus Intercultural Center.
Why he serves: To give back to an institution that gave him so much.
Kayla Massaro, ‘20
Human Biology
Kayla served on the Campus Activities Board and in the Honors program. Now an environmental educator with the National Park Service, she brings a passion for outdoor learning and connecting people to place.
Favorite memory: Stuff-A-Plush events — chatting with students and leaving with a cute takeaway.
Why she serves: To help others form the same lasting connections she found at UM–Flint.
Hannah R. Middleton, ‘24
Physician Assistant Program
A proud UM–Flint graduate, Hannah built close, personal and professional relationships while completing the rigorous Physician Assistant program. She remains committed to giving back to students and alumni and supporting traditions that celebrate academic milestones.
Favorite memory: “The many ceremonies celebrating students — white coat, commencement, and award celebrations.”
Why she serves: To continue enhancing the alumni experience for others.
Tina Nies, ‘89
Business Administration
Entrepreneur, bestselling author, and educator, Tina founded Be Happier Today, LLC and has taught business topics at Baker College. She previously chaired the UM–Flint Alumni Society Board and returns to the Alumni Engagement Board to reconnect with alumni and the campus.
Why she serves: To reconnect with UM–Flint in a meaningful way and foster new friendships.
Marissa Pierce, ‘03, ‘09 (MA)
BA Communications; MA English Language and Literature
Marissa leads development and external relations at the Flint Institute of Arts. With over 20 years of experience in PR and marketing, she brings nonprofit stewardship and community arts expertise to the board.
Why she serves: To leverage communications and fundraising expertise in support of UM–Flint’s mission.
Robert D. Swager, ‘19
Computer Science (Software Development)
Robert turned an early IT internship into a career supporting autonomous-vehicle mapping and now builds tools as a software engineer. He volunteers locally with urban-greening efforts and serves as a chapter advisor for his fraternity.
Favorite memory: “First class as an undergraduate — Eng 101 with Professor Jay Clark.”
Why he serves: To stay involved with the university and help shape future student experiences.
